The BullDuring our years in the commercial cattle business on places ranging from 17,000 acres in Texas to 178,000 acres in Western New Mexico, we came to believe that the bull represents more than half of the equation in a successful breeding program. We learned the hard way that his genes have a dominate effect on the consistency of the progeny. Proven BloodlinesSuccessful bloodlines are no secret, we see the best ones when they bring the big bucks in the sale ring, collect ribbons at the world show or win bronzes at the Horn Showcase. We have studied these results for some time now and have developed some preferences about the bloodlines that we want to focus on. It became clear when we studied these matters that no one breeder, sire or program has cornered longhorn genetics, rather that there are a variety of different approaches breeders use to enhance the genetic tendencies inherent in this fascinating breed. While we prefer the simplicity of using natural service by our own bulls, three of which are now over 70" tip-to-tip, we occasionally use artificial insemination to accomplish a particular pairing that we hold dear. And in addition, we leverage the genetics of about 15 of our exceptional mother cows with an ambitious Embryo Transfer program that presently involves up to 75 recipient cows. Our goal with all this is to couple all these breeding methods with the discipline necessary to blend the desirable bloodline in crosses that have proven their value, our intent being to realize consistent results while we selectively improve the desirable horn, size and color traits of our chosen bloodlines.
